Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically evaluate electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings from a cohort of centenarians.
  • To characterize the prevalence and types of ECG abnormalities in individuals aged 100 years and older.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of ECG tracings from 35 centenarians (aged 100-112 years) using the standardized Minnesota code.
  • ECG recordings were performed in the participants' place of residence.

Main Results:

  • Only 5.7% of centenarians presented with entirely normal ECGs.
  • Common abnormalities included leftward QRS axis deviation (45.7%), abnormal T wave morphology (42.9%), and ST segment depression (34.3%).
  • Other prevalent findings were extrasystolic beats (28.6%), left anterior hemiblock (25.7%), and first-degree atrioventricular block (17.1%).

Conclusions:

  • The majority of centenarians exhibit numerous, generally benign, electrocardiographic abnormalities.
  • Completely normal ECG recordings are uncommon in this extreme age group, suggesting age-related cardiac electrical remodeling.
