Background:

  • Thimerosal, an ethylmercury-containing preservative in vaccines, has raised concerns regarding potential links to neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • Mercuric compounds are known for their nephrotoxic and neurotoxic effects at high doses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between vaccination with thimerosal-containing vaccines and the development of autism and other autistic-spectrum disorders.
  • To determine if there is a dose-response relationship between ethylmercury exposure from vaccines and autistic-spectrum disorders.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based cohort study was conducted in Denmark, including 467,450 children born between 1990 and 1996.
  • Children vaccinated with thimerosal-containing vaccines were compared to those who received thimerosal-free formulations of the same vaccines.
  • Autism and autistic-spectrum disorders were assessed, with analysis of rate ratios and dose-response trends for ethylmercury.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in the risk of autism or other autistic-spectrum disorders was observed between children who received thimerosal-containing vaccines and those who received thimerosal-free vaccines.
  • The study found no evidence of a dose-response association between the amount of ethylmercury received and the risk of developing autism or other autistic-spectrum disorders.
  • Rate ratios for autism were 0.85 (95% CI, 0.60-1.20) and for other autistic-spectrum disorders were 1.12 (95% CI, 0.88-1.43).

Conclusions:

  • The findings do not support a causal relationship between childhood vaccination with thimerosal-containing vaccines and the development of autistic-spectrum disorders.
  • This research contributes to the understanding of vaccine safety and neurodevelopmental outcomes.
