    Summary

    Androgen receptor binding sites were found in human skin with seborrhoea but not in normal skin. This suggests androgen receptor content is key to understanding hormonal control of seborrhoea and acne.

    Background:

    • Seborrhoea and acne are common skin conditions often linked to hormonal factors.
    • Androgens play a significant role in regulating sebaceous gland activity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and significance of cytosol androgen receptor in human skin.
    • To explore the relationship between androgen receptor levels and seborrhoea.

    Main Methods:

    • Assay of cytosol androgen receptor in 18 human skin biopsies using a labeled synthetic androgen (methyltrienolone, R 1881).
    • Measurement of total androgen binding sites (free and occupied).

    Main Results:

    • Androgen binding sites were detected in skin biopsies from patients with marked seborrhoea (8 cases).
    • No androgen binding sites were found in normal skin biopsies (7 cases).
    • Three biopsies from seborrhoeic patients lacked detectable androgen receptors.

    Conclusions:

    • The presence of androgen receptor in skin appears associated with seborrhoea.
    • Androgen receptor content is an important factor in the hormonal regulation of seborrhoea.
    • Further research is needed to establish a direct quantitative correlation between receptor concentration and sebum excretion.
