Background:

Effective health communication is crucial for public health initiatives, particularly for conditions like stroke.
Written health information often presents challenges in readability for the general population.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the readability of a stroke education brochure.
To demonstrate methods for improving the readability of health literature.

Main Methods:

Readability analysis using three distinct formulas was performed on a brochure from the Australian National Stroke Foundation.
A section of the brochure was revised based on patient information guidelines and reanalyzed.

Main Results:

The original brochure's readability level was found to be too complex for the average reader.

Subsequent analysis revealed that simple revisions markedly enhanced the document's readability.

Conclusions:

Many stroke education materials may be inaccessible to the public due to complex language.
Implementing evidence-based revisions can significantly improve the clarity and effectiveness of stroke-related health literature.
This study provides a model for enhancing the readability of public health information to improve stroke prevention education.
