Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Hematology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) can present with diverse clinical manifestations.
  • Ocular involvement in ALL, though rare, requires prompt diagnosis and management.

Observation:

  • A patient with ALL presented with bilateral optic disc swelling, clinically resembling papilledema.
  • Direct leukemic cell infiltration of the optic nerve head was suspected as the cause.

Findings:

  • Ocular echography provided a detailed assessment of the optic disc, confirming leukemic infiltration.
  • This is the first reported echographic description of leukemic infiltration affecting the optic nerve head.

Implications:

  • Ocular echography is a valuable tool for diagnosing optic nerve head involvement in ALL.
