Thyroid function abnormalities are common in kidney transplant recipients. Free triiodothyronine (FT3) levels correlate with kidney graft function, suggesting thyroid hormone therapy may be beneficial.

Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Endocrinology
  • Transplant Medicine

Background:

  • Chronic renal failure often causes thyroid function abnormalities.
  • Limited data exists on thyroid function in long-term immunosuppressed kidney transplant (TX) recipients.
  • This study explores thyroid function markers in relation to kidney graft function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate correlations between FT3, FT4, TSH concentrations, thyroid volume, and graft function in kidney transplant recipients.
  • To compare thyroid function parameters between kidney transplant recipients and a control group with normal renal function.

Main Methods:

  • 46 kidney transplant recipients and 22 controls were studied.
  • Thyroid function tests (TSH, FT3, FT4) and serum creatinine were measured.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Thyroid volume was assessed using ultrasound.
  • Main Results:

    • Thyroid volume positively correlated with serum creatinine and negatively with TSH in TX patients.
    • FT3 concentration showed a negative correlation with creatinine in TX patients.
    • Time after transplant was negatively related to TSH levels.

    Conclusions:

    • FT3 concentration is a significant correlate of kidney graft function.
    • Consideration of supplementary thyroid hormone therapy in kidney transplant patients is recommended.
