Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Quality Improvement
  • Nursing Research
  • Patient Experience Measurement

Background:

  • Current methods for using patient feedback for quality improvement are often impractical for nursing or lack robust psychometric properties.
  • There is a need for validated tools to effectively translate patient opinions into actionable quality enhancement strategies within healthcare settings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate an Index of Measures that integrates patient perceptions of actual care with the subjective importance they place on these aspects.
  • To assess the added value of this new index compared to traditional methods relying solely on perceived care conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Developed an Index of Measures by combining patient perceptions of care reality with their subjective importance ratings for specific care items.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Collected data from 4002 Swedish somatic inpatients.
  • Defined a 'deficiency' value based on individual patient ratings exceeding group means for subjective importance and falling below group means for perceived reality.
  • Main Results:

    • The Index of Measures demonstrated added value in quality improvement initiatives compared to using only patients' ratings of actual care conditions.
    • Analysis focused on the proportion of patients identifying 'deficiency' values, indicating a gap between expected and actual care quality.
    • The study provides a framework for interpreting the index to guide necessary improvement actions.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed Index of Measures offers a psychometrically sound and practical tool for nursing quality improvement by incorporating patient-centered perspectives.
    • This index provides a nuanced understanding of patient needs and experiences, enabling more targeted and effective quality enhancement strategies.
    • Guidelines for implementing improvement actions based on the index's 'deficiency' values are proposed.
