Summary

The Swiss Society for Anesthesiology developed the Information System for Operations (ISOP) for anesthesia data collection. While ISOP demonstrated data handling capabilities, it underestimated hospital-specific needs and had a limited user interface.

Area of Science:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Health Informatics
  • Medical Data Management

Background:

  • Data collection is crucial in anesthesia for administrative, statistical, and medical purposes.
  • The Swiss Society of Anesthesiology recognized the need for a standardized, computer-compatible data collection system.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a versatile anesthesia data collection program compatible with various computers.
  • To expedite the process of collecting anesthesia-related data for multiple applications.

Main Methods:

  • Development of the Information System for Operations (ISOP) using the Massachusetts General Hospital Utility Multi Programming System (MUMPS) database and programming system.
  • Installation of ISOP in eight hospitals to assess its functionality and compatibility.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • ISOP met initial requirements for data collection and demonstrated strong data storage and handling capabilities within a personal computer (PC) network.
  • The system underestimated individual hospital requirements, and its user interface was found to be inferior to other PC packages due to limitations in windowing and mouse support.

Conclusions:

  • MUMPS offers robust data management for PC networks, but ISOP's user interface requires enhancement.
  • Future development will focus on improved statistical programs, on-line data acquisition modules, and intensive care unit (ICU) integration.
