Area of Science:

  • Plant biotechnology
  • Molecular biology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Plant biotechnology has advanced, improving heterologous protein production in plants.
  • Plant-produced monoclonal antibodies (plantibodies) are of significant interest.
  • Plantibodies have potential applications explored since their first expression in tobacco.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the progress and potential of plant-produced monoclonal antibodies.
  • To highlight the possibilities offered by full-length antibodies and antibody fragments in transgenic plants.
  • To identify remaining challenges for commercialization.

Main Methods:

  • Review of scientific literature on plantibody production.
  • Analysis of applications and expression systems for plantibodies.
  • Discussion of factors influencing protein accumulation in plants.

Main Results:

  • Plant biotechnology enables efficient production of various heterologous proteins, including monoclonal antibodies.
  • Transgenic plants offer potential for producing both full-length antibodies and antibody fragments.
  • Various applications for plantibodies have been explored.

Conclusions:

  • Plant-produced antibodies present intriguing possibilities for plant molecular biologists and breeders.
  • Further investigation into cellular targeting's influence on expression and accumulation is crucial.
  • Commercial, large-scale application of plantibody technology requires addressing these knowledge gaps.
