Summary

Bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) alone poorly predicts postvoid residual urine volume. Combining bladder outlet resistance with bladder contractility significantly improves prediction accuracy for voiding completion.

Background:

  • The provisional International Continence Society (ICS) nomogram is used to diagnose bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) in men.
  • A weak correlation has been observed between BOO diagnosis and postvoid residual urine volume (PVR).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the weak correlation between BOO and PVR.
  • To determine if incorporating bladder contractility improves PVR prediction.

Main Methods:

  • 131 male patients underwent pressure flow studies.
  • Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between voiding to completion and various resistance and contractility indexes.

    • A new index, "relative bladder outlet resistance," combining these factors, accurately predicts voiding completion and PVR.
    • This improved prediction offers a better understanding of "relative BOO."
