Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Head and Neck Surgery
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Ectopic thyroid tissue is an uncommon congenital condition.
  • Submandibular location of ectopic thyroid is exceptionally rare.
  • Associated normotopic thyroid disease presents unique clinical challenges.

Observation:

  • A case of ectopic thyroid tissue identified in the submandibular space is described.
  • The patient also presented with a concurrent normotopic multinodular goiter.
  • Diagnostic difficulties and management considerations are highlighted.

Findings:

  • This is the first reported instance of ectopic submandibular thyroid tissue coexisting with a normotopic multinodular goiter.
  • The presentation underscores the variability of ectopic thyroid presentations.
