Summary

High sun exposure, especially during younger years, significantly increases the risk of developing nuclear cataracts. Sunglasses may offer some protection against this vision impairment.

Background:

  • Cataracts are a primary cause of global blindness and visual impairment.
  • The link between sun exposure and cortical cataracts is known, but its association with nuclear cataracts is less clear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between lifetime sun exposure and the development of nuclear cataracts.
  • To determine if early-life sun exposure poses a greater risk for nuclear cataract formation.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study nested within the Nambour Skin Cancer Prevention Trial (1992-1996).
  • Compared 195 nuclear cataract cases (grade ≥2.0) with 159 controls.
  • Assessed lifetime sun exposure, eyewear use, education, and smoking history via questionnaires.
