Summary

Choroidal osteoma (CO) can present with varied symptoms, potentially delaying diagnosis of associated choroidal neovascularization (CNV). Prompt treatment, like laser photocoagulation, can lead to long-term inactivity of CNV.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Choroidal osteoma (CO) is a rare benign bone tumor of the choroid.
  • Associated choroidal neovascularization (CNV) can lead to visual impairment.

Observation:

  • A 27-year-old woman with metamorphopsia was diagnosed with CO.
  • Initial angiography (FA, ICG) did not reveal CNV.
  • Symptoms improved with oral corticosteroids but recurred upon interruption, revealing CNV.

Findings:

  • A well-defined CNV was identified ophthalmoscopically and via fluorescein angiography (FA) after corticosteroid withdrawal.
  • The CNV remained inactive for two years following argon laser photocoagulation.

Implications:

  • The diverse clinical and angiographic presentation of CO can complicate the diagnosis of concurrent CNV.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Timely intervention for CNV associated with CO is crucial for visual prognosis.
