Summary

The Netherlands has seen a rise in twin pregnancies, primarily due to women delaying childbirth and increased use of assisted reproduction. Advocating for single-embryo transfer in IVF could help reduce multiple births.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Public Health Trends
  • Obstetrics

Context:

  • Multiple pregnancy rates have risen in the Netherlands since the 1980s.
  • While triplet rates are declining, twin pregnancies continue to increase.
  • Delayed childbearing and subfertility contribute significantly to this trend.

Purpose:

  • To analyze the trends and causes of multiple pregnancies in the Netherlands.
  • To identify key factors contributing to increased twin and higher-order multiple births.
  • To propose strategies for mitigating multiple pregnancy rates.

Summary:

  • Advanced maternal age increases spontaneous multiple pregnancy risk.
  • Assisted reproductive technologies, including intra-uterine insemination (IUI) and in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), are major drivers of multiple births.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Mild ovarian hyperstimulation with IUI is a common cause of higher-order multiples, while IVF with double-embryo transfer results in a substantial percentage of twins.
  • Impact:

    • Highlights the need for increased awareness of delayed childbearing risks.
    • Supports the recommendation for more frequent single-embryo transfer in IVF to reduce twin rates.
    • Informs public health policy and clinical practice regarding fertility treatments and multiple gestation.
