Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Radiology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Headaches can be caused by various intracranial and extracranial pathologies.
  • Skull lesions, though rare, require accurate diagnosis and management.

Observation:

  • A 60-year-old female presented with a 4-year history of non-specific headaches.
  • Imaging revealed a well-defined, lobulated, radiolucent lesion in the parietal bone.
  • MRI demonstrated a 2 cm cystic lesion in the diploic space, with CSF-like signal intensity and no contrast enhancement.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination confirmed the lesion as a simple bone cyst (SBC) without epithelial lining.
  • Surgical removal via craniectomy was performed.
  • The postoperative course was uneventful, with no dural involvement.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Simple bone cysts of the skull are benign and treatable lesions.
  • Accurate radiological assessment is crucial for diagnosis.
  • Surgical excision is an effective treatment for symptomatic SBCs.
