Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Gastroenterology
  • Emergency Medicine

Background:

  • Rectal foreign bodies in children are uncommon but can lead to significant complications.
  • Prompt diagnosis and management are crucial for favorable outcomes.

Observation:

  • A 14-year-old male presented with a deliberately inserted soda can in his rectum, retained for 48 hours.
  • The foreign body, an empty soda can, was lodged within the rectal lumen.

Findings:

  • Surgical intervention was required for the removal of the rectal foreign body.
  • The soda can was successfully extracted by manipulating its shape from cylindrical to conical in the operating room.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the importance of considering unusual foreign bodies in pediatric rectal presentations.
  • Effective management strategies for complex rectal foreign bodies in children should be established.
  • Further research into the incidence and management of pediatric rectal foreign bodies is warranted.
