Evidence for anti-spasticity agents in multiple sclerosis (MS) is limited. Current research shows poor documentation of efficacy and tolerability, preventing prescribing recommendations for MS spasticity management.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Spasticity is a prevalent and debilitating symptom in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.
  • It leads to pain, spasms, functional loss, and challenges in patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of anti-spasticity medications in MS patients.
  • To compare the effectiveness of different anti-spasticity agents.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of double-blind, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of at least seven days duration.
  • Searched multiple databases including Cochrane, MEDLINE, and EMBASE up to June 2003.
  • Data extraction by two independent reviewers; meta-analysis was not feasible due to study limitations.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Twenty-six placebo-controlled and thirteen comparative studies were included.
  • Few studies demonstrated statistically significant differences in spasticity reduction using the Ashworth scale.
  • Functional assessments were inconclusive, and other outcomes used unvalidated measures.

Conclusions:

  • The efficacy and tolerability of anti-spasticity agents for MS are poorly documented.
  • Current evidence does not support prescribing recommendations.
  • Further research is needed to understand the rationale for treating upper motor neuron syndrome and develop validated spasticity measures.
