    Background:

    • Animal studies suggest intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIg) may reverse central nervous system demyelination.
    • Clinical trials have explored IVIg for multiple sclerosis (MS).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of IVIg in individuals with MS.
    • To summarize existing evidence on IVIg for MS treatment.

    Main Methods:

    • Systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for secondary prevention of relapses and progression in MS.
    • Searched multiple databases including Cochrane, MEDLINE, and EMBASE up to 2003.
    • Contacted pharmaceutical companies and trial authors for additional data.

    Main Results:

    • Two included trials (168 participants) indicated a reduced relapse rate and increased time to first relapse with IVIg.
    • Reliable disease progression outcomes and MRI data were not reported in the included trials.

    • IVIg shows potential as a preventative treatment for relapses in relapsing-remitting MS.
    • Further studies are recommended using MRI and disease progression endpoints.
