The Carbon Cycle01:14

The Carbon Cycle

44.1K
Carbon is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and is recycled through the ecosystem in two primary processes: one in which carbon is exchanged among living organisms, and one in which carbon is cycled over long periods of time through fossilized organic remains, weathering of rocks, and volcanic activity. Human activities, including increased agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels, has greatly affected the balance of the natural carbon cycle.

Ecological Succession02:17

Ecological Succession

21.6K
Ecological succession is influenced by the processes of facilitation, inhibition, and toleration. Facilitation occurs when early successional species create more favorable ecological conditions for subsequent species, such as enhanced nutrient, water, or light availability. In contrast, inhibition happens when early successional species create unfavorable ecological conditions for potential successive species, such as limiting resource availability. In some cases, later successional species...

What is Evolutionary History?02:35

What is Evolutionary History?

43.7K
Scientists record evolutionary history by analyzing fossil, morphological, and genetic data. The fossil record documents the history of life on Earth and provides evidence for evolution. However, both fossil and living organisms offer evidence that outlines Earth’s evolutionary history.

Summary

Eruptive syringoma presents as rare, flesh-colored papules appearing in crops, typically starting around puberty. This benign condition often has unsatisfactory treatment outcomes, as illustrated by a recent case study.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Histopathology
  • Clinical Case Reports

Background:

  • Eruptive syringoma is a rare adnexal neoplasm characterized by multiple small papules.
  • Lesions typically manifest during the peripubertal period and predominantly affect the anterior trunk.
  • The etiology remains largely unknown, though associations with certain genetic syndromes have been suggested.

Observation:

  • A 27-year-old male presented with a one-year history of eruptive syringoma.
  • The patient exhibited successive crops of small, flesh-colored papules on his anterior body surfaces.
  • Clinical examination revealed characteristic features consistent with syringoma.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of eruptive syringoma, showing benign eccrine ductal differentiation.

  • The benign nature of the lesions was established, ruling out malignant potential.
  • The case highlights the clinical presentation and diagnostic confirmation of this rare condition.
  • Implications:

    • This case underscores the diagnostic criteria and clinical course of eruptive syringoma.
    • The generally unsatisfactory treatment options for eruptive syringoma necessitate further research into effective therapeutic strategies.
    • Understanding the presentation of eruptive syringoma aids dermatologists in accurate diagnosis and patient counseling.
