Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Pediatrics
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of movement disorders.
  • Understanding its clinical patterns and causes is crucial for intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To retrospectively analyze the clinical characteristics and etiological factors of 544 cerebral palsy cases.
  • To identify the most prevalent types and contributing factors of CP.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 544 cerebral palsy patient records.
  • Data collection on demographic, clinical, and etiological factors.
  • Statistical analysis of the collected data.

Main Results:

  • Spastic cerebral palsy (91.4%) was the predominant type, with quadriplegia (34.9%) being most frequent.
  • Associated conditions included mental retardation (47.2%) and speech impairment (37%).
  • Natal factors (43.8%) were the leading etiological cause, followed by postnatal (26.1%) and prenatal (7.7%).

Conclusions:

  • Spastic CP, particularly quadriplegia, is the most common presentation.
  • Natal events represent the primary risk period for CP development.
  • Comprehensive management strategies should address associated impairments and focus on preventable natal causes.
