Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish national patterns of RT practice for nonmetastatic lung cancer in the United States.
  • To analyze treatment strategies employed in 1998-1999 for lung carcinoma.
  • To provide a baseline for future quality improvement initiatives in lung cancer care.

Main Methods:

  • A national survey of randomly selected RT institutions was conducted using two-stage cluster sampling.
  • Data were collected from 42,335 patient records (541 unweighted) from 58 institutions.
  • Patients with nonmetastatic lung cancer (Karnofsky performance score [KPS] ≥ 60) receiving RT were included.
