Summary

A single 2-hour post-glucose challenge plasma sample is more effective for early type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) detection than fasting glucose tests. This method identifies more diabetic patients, including those with isolated post-prandial hyperglycemia.

Background:

  • Recent American Diabetes Association (ADA)/WHO guidelines favor fasting glucose over oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) for type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) detection.
  • This shift risks missing cases of isolated post-prandial hyperglycemia, a critical diagnostic gap.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a more efficient single-sample diagnostic method for type 2 DM.
  • To identify optimal timing and sample type for post-challenge glucose testing.

Main Methods:

  • Oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) were conducted on 240 high-risk subjects.
  • Glucose and insulin levels were measured at 30-minute intervals in capillary blood, venous blood, and plasma.
