Area of Science:

  • Phytochemistry
  • Natural Product Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry

Background:

  • The genus Veronica is known for its diverse secondary metabolites.
  • Flavonoid glycosides and iridoid glucosides are common in medicinal plants.
  • Understanding the chemical composition of Veronica species is important for chemotaxonomy and potential applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the flavonoid glycoside profile of selected Veronica taxa.
  • To isolate and characterize novel compounds from these species.
  • To identify unusual glycosides and iridoid glucosides within the genus.

Main Methods:

  • Phytochemical investigation using chromatographic separation techniques.
  • Structure elucidation of isolated compounds via Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy (1H and 13C NMR).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Isolation of compounds from V. liwanensis, V. longifolia, V. intercedens, and V. orientalis.
  • Main Results:

    • Two new acylated 5,6,7,3',4'-pentahydroxyflavone (6-hydroxyluteolin) glycosides were identified: 6-hydroxyluteolin 4'-methyl ether 7-O-alpha-rhamnopyranosyl(1"-->2")[6"-O-acetyl-beta-glucopyranoside] and 6-hydroxyluteolin 7-O-(6"-O-(E)-caffeoyl)-beta-glucopyranoside.
    • Two unusual allose-containing acylated 5,7,8,4'-tetrahydroxyflavone (isoscutellarein) glycosides were isolated: isoscutellarein 7-O-(6"'-O-acetyl)-beta-allopyranosyl(1"'-->2")-beta-glucopyranoside and its 4'-methyl ether.
    • Complete 1H and 13C NMR spectral assignments were provided for the isoscutellarein glycosides.
    • Two iridoid glucosides, melittoside and globularifolin, previously unreported in the Veronica genus, were isolated from V. intercedens.

    Conclusions:

    • The study successfully identified and characterized novel flavonoid glycosides and unusual glycosides in selected Veronica species.
    • The findings contribute to the chemotaxonomic understanding of the Veronica genus.
    • The isolation of melittoside and globularifolin expands the known iridoid glucoside diversity in Veronica.
