Area of Science:

  • Crystallography
  • Solid-state chemistry
  • Inorganic chemistry

Background:

  • Previous studies reported substitutional dimorphism in tetraphenylarsonium iodide (Ph(4)AsI) and tetraphenylphosphonium iodide (Ph(4)PI).
  • These reports suggested different crystal structures for Ph(4)AsI under certain conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To re-examine and clarify the crystal structures of Ph(4)PI and Ph(4)AsI.
  • To verify or refute the existence of substitutional dimorphism in Ph(4)AsI.

Main Methods:

  • Re-examination of reported crystal structures.
  • Crystallographic analysis of tetraphenylarsonium iodide.

Main Results:

  • The previously reported substitutional dimorphism in tetraphenylarsonium iodide could not be reproduced.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Tetraphenylarsonium iodide was found to be isostructural with tetraphenylphosphonium iodide.
  • Both the tetraphenylarsonium cation and the iodide anion are located on -4 symmetry sites.
  • Crystal packing analysis revealed linear chains of cations arranged in fourfold phenyl embraces.
  • Conclusions:

    • Tetraphenylarsonium iodide does not exhibit substitutional dimorphism.
    • Ph(4)AsI and Ph(4)PI share the same crystal structure.
    • The crystal structure is characterized by specific cation-anion arrangements and packing motifs.
