Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Diagnostic Radiology
  • Ultrasound Technology

Background:

  • Ultrasound contrast agents are gas bubbles with stabilizing shells.
  • Contrast-specific ultrasound techniques enhance imaging of vessels and organs.
  • Their diagnostic value is comparable to CT and MRI contrast agents.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review physicochemical properties of microbubble contrast agents.
  • To discuss non-linear bubble behavior and contrast-specific imaging.
  • To overview clinical applications in liver, kidney, and spleen.

Main Methods:

  • Review of physicochemical properties of microbubble contrast agents.
  • Discussion of non-linear bubble dynamics.
  • Analysis of contrast-specific ultrasound imaging techniques.
  • Overview of clinical applications.

Main Results:

  • Microbubble agents provide substantial enhancement in ultrasound imaging.
  • Contrast-specific techniques improve visualization of organs and vessels.
  • Diagnostic accuracy is considerably improved in various clinical scenarios.

Conclusions:

  • Ultrasound contrast agents add valuable information to sonography.
  • These agents offer diagnostic capabilities comparable to CT and MRI.
  • Key applications include imaging of the liver, kidney, and spleen.
