[Prevention of colorectal cancer still not adequately accepted. Encourage early detection!]
1Medizinische Klinik C, Klinikum der Stadt Ludwigshafen.
Abstract:
Effective prevention of colorectal cancer (CRC) is only possible on the basis of an appreciably increased acceptance by the population at large of the preventive measures currently being offered. Currently, however, only a fraction of the German population is taking up the offer of early detection measures for this cancer. Although such primary preventive measures as a low-fat, high-fiber diet and regular physical exercise are well known, only some 20% of the population is taking them up. The family doctor has a special role in motivating his/her patients to implement primary and secondary preventive measures. It is only in this way that the aims of relevant special-interest societies and self-help groups, namely to halve the number of deaths from colonic cancer by the year 2006, can be achieved.
