Surgery for snoring significantly improves partner satisfaction and sleep quality. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UVPP) showed better long-term results than laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) in reducing snoring and sleep disturbances.
Area of Science:
- Otolaryngology
- Sleep Medicine
- Surgical Outcomes
Background:
- Snoring surgery is primarily sought for partner benefit, yet long-term partner satisfaction data is scarce.
- Evaluating surgical outcomes from the partner's perspective is crucial for understanding treatment efficacy.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess long-term partner satisfaction following laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) and uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UVPP).
- To compare the effectiveness of LAUP and UVPP in reducing snoring and improving sleep for partners.
Main Methods:
- A questionnaire-based survey was conducted with a minimum 1-year follow-up.
- 91 patients undergoing either LAUP (n=50) or UVPP (n=41) were evaluated.
- Data on snoring recurrence, sleep disturbance, and quality of life were collected and analyzed.
Main Results:
- Residual snoring was more frequent after LAUP than UVPP (P=0.012).
- Partners reported less difficulty falling asleep after UVPP (P=0.041).
- Both procedures significantly reduced sleep disturbance and awakenings (P<0.001), improving quality of life.
Conclusions:
- UVPP appears to offer superior long-term partner satisfaction compared to LAUP.
- A proposed grading system can quantify partner satisfaction.
- Surgical interventions for snoring are justified based on long-term partner-reported outcomes.
