Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether drinking water before a postural stress test enhances orthostatic tolerance in healthy adults.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-two healthy adults (18-42 years) underwent 60-degree head-up tilt-table testing.
  • Participants were randomized to drink 16 oz of water 5 minutes before testing or undergo testing without water, with each condition tested on separate days.
  • Orthostatic tolerance was assessed by time to presyncope or syncope, heart rate, and total peripheral resistance.

Main Results:

  • Water ingestion significantly reduced the incidence of presyncope during tilt-table testing (1 of 22 vs. 8 of 22 subjects).
  • Water drinking attenuated heart rate increases and accentuated total peripheral resistance increases during tilt.
  • Head-up tilt tolerance was extended by an average of 8.5 minutes (26% increase) after water consumption.

Conclusions:

  • Water consumption enhances upright posture tolerance in healthy individuals.
  • The mechanism involves increased peripheral vascular resistance, counteracting orthostatic stress.
  • Water may serve as a simple prophylactic measure against vasovagal reactions, relevant for scenarios like blood donation.
