Early screening for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) in schools is feasible and cost-effective. This approach identifies children with FAS and partial FAS, enabling timely intervention and improving prevalence estimates.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatrics
  • Public Health
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a leading cause of preventable birth defects and neurodevelopmental disabilities.
  • Early identification of FAS is critical for accessing intervention services and establishing accurate prevalence data.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of screening for FAS in a community elementary school setting.
  • To estimate the prevalence of FAS and partial FAS within a school population.
  • To determine if a community-based screening program can be implemented by existing school personnel.

Main Methods:

  • Kindergarten students were screened using the FAS Screen.
  • Children scoring above the positive screen cutoff (20) were referred for diagnostic evaluation.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Screening was conducted annually by school staff over a 9-year period.
  • Main Results:

    • 1384 students were screened, with 69 (5%) having a positive screen.
    • Of those referred, 7 children (10%) were diagnosed with FAS (n=6) or partial FAS (n=1).
    • The prevalence of FAS and partial FAS was found to be 1 in 198 students (4.3 per 1000).

    Conclusions:

    • The FAS Screen demonstrates acceptable epidemiologic performance in a community school setting.
    • The screening process is brief (8-10 minutes), well-accepted, and cost-effective (under $8.00 per student).
    • This school-based screening strategy is a viable method for early identification of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
