Summary

Women are more likely to be admitted to the ICU for status asthmaticus (SA), but men have a higher incidence of endotracheal intubation (ETI). This study compared SA admissions between genders to understand critical care needs.

Area of Science:

  • Critical care medicine
  • Pulmonology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Adult women may have increased susceptibility to asthma.
  • Women are more prone to developing severe status asthmaticus (SA) requiring intensive care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare demographic and physiological variables of patients admitted to the ICU for SA.
  • To investigate gender-based differences in critical care requirements for status asthmaticus.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of medical records for SA patients admitted to the ICU between 1994 and 2000.
  • Extraction of demographic and physiological data, including age and APACHE II scores.
  • Comparison of outcomes such as endotracheal intubation (ETI) and length of stay between genders.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Of 37 patients with SA, 24 were female and 13 were male.
  • Women accounted for more ICU admissions and repeat admissions.
  • Men had a higher incidence of endotracheal intubation (Relative Risk=1.6).

Conclusions:

  • Women represent a larger proportion of ICU admissions for status asthmaticus.
  • Men experienced a higher rate of endotracheal intubation, indicating a potentially more severe presentation in critical care settings.
