Summary

Laparoscopic umbilical hernia repair (LR) offers faster recovery and fewer complications than open repair with mesh (ORWM). Patients with large or recurrent hernias benefit most from LR.

Area of Science:

  • Surgical Innovation
  • Hernia Repair Techniques
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Background:

  • Prosthetic material in open umbilical hernia repair is known to reduce recurrence.
  • Comparing laparoscopic versus open umbilical hernia repair outcomes is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare outcomes of laparoscopic repair versus open umbilical hernia repair.

Main Methods:

  • A review of 76 umbilical hernia repairs from November 1995 to October 2000.
  • Comparison of demographic data, hernia characteristics, and outcomes between laparoscopic repair (LR), primary suture repair (PSR), and open repair with mesh (ORWM).

Main Results:

  • Open repair with mesh (ORWM) had longer operating times, more drains, higher complication rates, and slower return to normal activities (RTNA).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Laparoscopic repair (LR) showed lower recurrence rates compared to ORWM, especially for hernias larger than 3 cm or with previous repairs.
  • Length of stay (LOS) was longer in ORWM than PSR.
  • Conclusions:

    • Laparoscopic repair (LR) leads to faster RTNA and reduced complication and recurrence rates compared to ORWM.
    • LR is particularly beneficial for patients with larger hernias and those with a history of previous repairs.
