Background:

Observation:

  • Yellow discoloration was observed in osteoid seams of demineralized trabecular bone at metastasis sites.
  • This color change was specific to unmineralized osteoid.

Findings:

  • Intralesional hemorrhage and red blood cell breakdown released bilirubin.
  • High local bilirubin concentration caused the yellow hue in unmineralized osteoid.
  • Mineralized osteoid and bone cells showed no morphological changes.

Implications:

  • Bilirubin deposition in osteoid may serve as a histopathological indicator of metastatic cancer.
  • Further research can explore the diagnostic potential of this observation in bone metastasis.
