  • Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) may offer protection by reducing colonic contractility.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential protective effect of calcium channel blockers against perforated colonic diverticular disease.
  • To test the hypothesis that CCBs can prevent PCDD using a case-control design.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted over five years in two UK hospitals.
  • 120 cases of acute PCDD were matched with 240 controls (ophthalmology and dermatology patients).
  • Pre-admission drug use data were compared between cases and controls.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant protective association was observed between CCB use and PCDD.
  • Odds ratios for CCB use were 0.41 (ophthalmology controls) and 0.36 (dermatology controls).
