Summary

Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is a rare B-cell cancer. This study found that HCL cells express CD52, supporting the use of alemtuzumab (anti-CD52) for treating refractory HCL cases.

Background:

  • Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is a rare chronic B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder.
  • Refractory HCL cases have limited treatment alternatives.
  • Monoclonal antibody therapy, such as alemtuzumab (anti-CD52), shows promise for B-cell malignancies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate CD52 antigen expression on malignant cells in HCL.
  • To determine the rationale for using alemtuzumab in refractory HCL.

  • Flow cytometry was used to analyze CD52 expression.
  • Nine cases of HCL and one HCL variant were examined.

  • All examined HCL cases showed high expression of CD52 antigen (92-100%) on malignant cells.
