Nonfunctioning pancreatic endocrine tumors (NFPTs) are more common in women and middle-aged individuals. Early detection, surgical removal, and absence of metastasis significantly improve survival for NFPT patients.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Oncology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Nonfunctioning pancreatic endocrine tumors (NFPTs) are rare and infrequently studied.
  • Limited data exists on the comprehensive clinical characteristics of NFPTs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide an updated and comprehensive clinical overview of NFPTs.
  • To identify factors influencing the clinical presentation and prognosis of NFPTs.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 184 patients with histologically confirmed NFPTs from three Italian hospitals over 15 years.
  • Data collection through medical charts and direct patient interviews.
  • Histological confirmation using conventional and immunohistochemical techniques.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • NFPTs were slightly more prevalent in women (53.8%) and diagnosed at a mean age of 55.2 years.
  • A family history of exocrine pancreatic carcinoma was noted in 3.9% of patients.
  • Incidental diagnosis via ultrasound (34.8%) correlated with significantly better survival compared to symptomatic diagnosis (p=0.0043).
  • Tumor resection, absence of metastases, and tumor size ≤3 cm were associated with improved survival (p<0.0001, p<0.0001, p<0.0007, respectively).

Conclusions:

  • NFPTs predominantly affect middle-aged women, with no identified risk factors beyond family history.
  • Asymptomatic tumor detection, surgical resection, lack of metastases, and small tumor size are key determinants of prolonged survival in NFPT patients.
