Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Urology
  • Transplant Medicine

Background:

  • Encrusted pyelitis is a rare but serious complication following kidney transplantation.
  • Early diagnosis and management are essential to prevent graft dysfunction.

Observation:

  • A 10-year-old girl with a kidney graft developed encrusted pyelitis.
  • Treatment involved nephrostomy tube irrigation with an acidifier.

Findings:

  • Significant reduction in the size of the calcified pyelic plaque was observed after 16 days.
  • Good renal function was maintained post-treatment.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering encrusted pyelitis in transplant patients with negative urine cultures and alkaline pH.
