Research considerations: family opinions about elderly relatives in research

As the elderly population expands due to longer life expectancy, clinical investigation will be required to provide optimal care. Family members of the elderly often become involved in the decision to participate in clinical investigation due to moral, ethical, personal, and financial concerns. Establishing rapport with the patient and family members is of great importance for the nurse when conducting clinical investigation. Most relatives interviewed for this study had positive opinions toward research with the elderly.
