Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether cellular processes in bone contribute to the known effects of age, gender, and season on racehorse injury risk.
  • To utilize biochemical markers of bone cell activity to assess bone turnover in young Thoroughbreds.

Main Methods:

  • Monthly blood samples were collected from 2-year-old Thoroughbreds in race training over a 10-month period.
  • Concentrations of osteocalcin (OC, bone formation), carboxyterminal cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP, bone resorption), and carboxyterminal propeptide of type I collagen (PICP) were measured.
