Summary

Loudness recalibration, or induced loudness reduction (ILR), is reduced when inducer tones are shorter than test tones. The duration of the inducer, not its loudness or level, is key to this auditory phenomenon.

Background:

  • A louder tone typically decreases in perceived loudness after being preceded by a more intense tone.
  • This effect is known as loudness recalibration or induced loudness reduction (ILR).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how induced loudness reduction (ILR) is influenced by the level, loudness, and duration of the preceding inducer tone.
  • To determine the relationship between inducer and test tone durations in the context of ILR.

Main Methods:

  • A two-alternative forced choice (2AFC) procedure was employed.
  • Loudness matches were conducted between 2500-Hz comparison tones and 500-Hz test tones at 60 and 70 dB SPL.
  • Inducer tones (500-Hz) of varying durations (5 ms and 200 ms) and levels were presented before the test tones.

Main Results:

  • ILR amount was independent of inducer level for levels 80 dB SPL and above.
  • ILR was greater for 200-ms inducers compared to 5-ms inducers, even when loudness was matched.
  • For 5-ms test tones, ILR was similar whether the inducer was 5 ms or 200 ms.
  • Maximal ILR occurred when inducer duration equaled or exceeded test-tone duration.

Conclusions:

  • Neither inducer loudness nor sound pressure level (SPL) alone determines the extent of ILR.
  • Inducer duration is a critical factor, needing to match or surpass test-tone duration for maximum ILR.
  • The efferent auditory system may contribute to ILR for longer tones (200 ms) but is less likely involved in ILR for very short tones (5 ms).
