Cutaneous cysts are common skin tumors. While often benign and easily removed, some mimic cysts can be cancerous, highlighting the need for histological examination.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Cutaneous cysts are frequent benign tumors often treated with simple enucleation.
  • Typical clinical presentation and gross appearance can lead to a presumptive diagnosis of epidermal cyst.
  • Histological examination is often bypassed for presumed benign cystic lesions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the diagnostic accuracy of clinical assessment for cutaneous cysts.
  • To highlight the potential for misdiagnosis of malignant or atypical lesions presenting as common cutaneous cysts.
  • To emphasize the importance of histological examination for all excised cutaneous lesions.

Main Methods:

  • Case series presentation of five patients with cutaneous lesions.
  • Clinical and surgical assessment of lesions.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Histopathological analysis of excised tissue.
  • Main Results:

    • Three basal cell carcinomas, one benign proliferating trichilemmal cyst, and one malignant proliferating trichilemmal cyst were identified.
    • None of these lesions were clinically distinguishable from a typical epidermal cyst.
    • The study identified potentially malignant or aggressive lesions masquerading as benign cysts.

    Conclusions:

    • Clinical diagnosis alone is insufficient for all cutaneous cysts.
    • Malignant and atypical proliferating lesions can mimic benign epidermal cysts.
    • Histopathological examination is crucial for accurate diagnosis and appropriate patient management of all excised cutaneous cysts.
