Abdominal actinomycosis: a case report.

Summary

Actinomycosis, a rare anaerobic infection, can present as an intra-abdominal mass. This case highlights the need for accurate diagnosis and surgical intervention for extensive abdominal actinomycosis.

Background:

Actinomycosis is an anaerobic bacterial infection caused by actinomycetes, normally found in the human body.
While typically treatable with antibiotics, diagnosis often requires surgical intervention.

Observation:

A 41-year-old woman presented with an intra-abdominal mass due to extensive actinomycosis affecting the hepatic flexure.
She underwent emergency surgery for mass excision.

Findings:

A literature review revealed emergency surgery is rarely reported for abdominal actinomycosis.
Abdominal actinomycosis, though decreasing overall, is increasingly observed, potentially linked to intra-uterine device use.

Implications:

Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare condition that can mimic other diseases.
Accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment of this challenging infection.
