Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Locomotion

Background:

  • Central pattern generators (CPGs) control rhythmic movements like locomotion.
  • Understanding CPGs is key to deciphering motor control.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the neuronal organization of the feline forelimb locomotor CPG.
  • To analyze the effects of cervical lateral funiculus (CLF) stimulation on motoneurons.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized fictive locomotion induced by CLF stimulation in decerebrate cat preparations.
  • Recorded stimulus time-locked responses of cervical motoneurons (MNs).
  • Performed correlation analysis on extensor and flexor MN activity.

Main Results:

  • Observed phase-related amplitudes of disynaptic EPSPs, trisynaptic EPSPs/IPSPs, and polysynaptic PSPs in MNs.
  • Demonstrated rhythmic modulation between extensor and flexor MN responses.
  • Identified a disynaptic pathway as the shortest CLF route to MNs via the CPG.

Conclusions:

  • Proposed that intercalated interneurons (INs) form mutually exciting circuits within the CPG.
  • Suggested these IN circuits contribute to the generation of locomotor rhythms.
  • Highlighted the role of mutual interactions between neuronal pathways in motor control.
