Area of Science:

  • Medical research
  • Pulmonology
  • Rheumatology

Background:

  • Sarcoidosis is a multisystem inflammatory disease of unknown etiology.
  • Löfgren syndrome is an acute, typically benign presentation of sarcoidosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the clinical characteristics and epidemiological features of sarcoidosis patients.
  • To compare Löfgren syndrome with other sarcoidosis presentations.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 514 sarcoidosis patients diagnosed between 1966 and 2002.
  • Comparison of demographic and clinical data between Löfgren syndrome and other sarcoidosis groups.

Main Results:

  • Löfgren syndrome accounted for 19.1% of sarcoidosis cases.
  • Female patients were more prevalent in Löfgren syndrome (4.8:1 ratio).
  • Erythema nodosum (72.4%) and arthralgia/arthritis (51%) were more frequent in Löfgren syndrome, while pulmonary involvement was higher in other sarcoidosis forms.

Conclusions:

  • Löfgren syndrome exhibits distinct demographic and clinical features compared to other sarcoidosis presentations.
  • Early recognition of Löfgren syndrome is important for appropriate patient management.
