Lethal post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage (PTH) is rare but can be fatal. Early surgical intervention and close follow-up are crucial for managing this complication and improving patient outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Pediatric Surgery

Background:

  • Post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage (PTH) is a known complication.
  • Lethal outcomes, though rare, necessitate evaluation of clinical features.

Observation:

  • A retrospective case series of five patients with lethal PTH.
  • Literature review identified eight additional cases since 1958.
  • Patients ranged from 42 months to 18 years; all reported cases were male.

Findings:

  • Three patients left the hospital against medical advice before fatal bleeding.
  • Two patients experienced prior bleeding episodes.
  • Fatal hemorrhage occurred between 5-54 days post-tonsillectomy.

Implications:

  • Immediate surgical treatment may prevent fatalities.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Close postoperative follow-up is vital for early detection of bleeding.
  • Further case collection is needed to establish guidelines for lethal PTH management.
