Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Classic Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) is characterized by CD30 and CD15 coexpression.
  • Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) can mimic HL histologically.
  • Coexpression of CD30 and CD15 in PTCL is infrequently reported.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe cases of PTCL with coexpression of CD30 and CD15.
  • To characterize the morphologic and immunophenotypic features of these PTCLs.
  • To differentiate these PTCLs from classic HL.

Main Methods:

  • Case series analysis of 11 PTCL patients.
  • Morphologic and immunophenotypic evaluation including CD30, CD15, CD20, CD79a, CD45, CD25, and T-cell markers.
  • Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for T-cell receptor gamma (TCR-gamma) and immunoglobulin heavy (IgH) chain gene rearrangements.

Related Experiment Videos

  • In situ hybridization for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).
  • Main Results:

    • Eleven PTCL cases showed CD30 and CD15 coexpression in a subset of neoplastic cells.
    • Two groups were identified: 5 mimicking classic HL and 6 with PTCL morphology.
    • Molecular studies confirmed T-cell clonality (9/11 cases) and excluded B-cell origin.
    • EBV was negative in all cases.

    Conclusions:

    • PTCLs can exhibit CD30 and CD15 coexpression, mimicking classic HL.
    • Combined immunophenotypic and molecular analyses are crucial for accurate diagnosis.
    • These findings expand the spectrum of PTCL presentations.
