Acute arterial occlusion after total knee arthroplasty

Arterial thrombosis can occur in total knee arthroplasty irrespective of ischemic time. Performing surgery without ischemia is recommended for patients with risk factors to prevent popliteal artery occlusion.

Observation:
- Two cases of thrombotic occlusion of the popliteal artery after total knee arthroplasty are presented.
- The first patient underwent surgery with a prolonged ischemic time, while the second had a limited ischemic time (cementing phase only).
Findings:
- Arterial thrombosis occurred in both patients, despite variations in ischemic time.
- Immediate vascular surgery in both cases did not result in clinical restrictions.
Implications:
- The duration of ischemia may not be the sole predictor of arterial thrombosis in total knee arthroplasty.
- Consideration should be given to performing total knee arthroplasty without ischemia in patients with identified risk factors for arterial thrombosis.
