Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology and surgical oncology
  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Colorectal surgery

Context:

  • Colonoscopic polypectomy is standard for benign colorectal neoplasms.
  • Sessile polyps present greater removal challenges than pedunculated ones.
  • Endoscopically irretrievable polyps necessitate alternative surgical strategies.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic or laparoscopic-assisted colonic resection for endoscopically irretrievable polyps.
  • To compare outcomes of laparoscopic resection versus traditional laparotomy for these polyps.
  • To assess the long-term preference for laparoscopic techniques in managing challenging colorectal polyps.

Summary:

  • A retrospective study compared 12 patients undergoing laparoscopic resection for endoscopically irretrievable polyps with 12 undergoing laparotomy and 23 prior laparoscopic cases.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No significant differences in outcomes were observed between the laparoscopic and laparotomic groups.
  • Laparoscopic or laparoscopic-assisted colonic resection is the preferred method for managing these difficult-to-remove colorectal polyps.
  • Impact:

    • Laparoscopic resection provides a viable, minimally invasive alternative for managing complex colorectal polyps.
    • This approach may reduce patient recovery time and associated morbidities compared to open surgery.
    • Supports the continued use and refinement of laparoscopic techniques in colorectal surgery.
