Summary

Thyroid dysfunction significantly alters lipid profiles and lowers paraoxonase 1 (PON1) activity. This reduction in PON1 may contribute to increased LDL-cholesterol oxidation in patients with thyroid disorders.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess serum lipids, lipoproteins, apolipoproteins, and paraoxonase 1 (PON1) activity in patients with thyroid dysfunction.
  • To investigate the relationship between thyroid status and these biochemical markers.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study comparing 99 patients (49 hypothyroid, 50 hyperthyroid) with age- and sex-matched controls.
  • Measurement of serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, apolipoproteins A-I and B, and PON1 activity from fasting blood samples.
