Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the psychological and demographic attributes of long-term heavy cannabis users.
  • To compare heavy users with a control group of lighter cannabis smokers.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study design was employed.
  • 108 individuals (age 30-55) with extensive cannabis use (mean 18,000 times) were compared to 72 age-matched controls (smoked ≤50 times).
  • Psychological and demographic measures were collected.

Main Results:

  • Heavy cannabis users reported significantly lower educational attainment and income compared to controls, even after adjusting for confounding variables.
  • Majorities of heavy users (66-90%) reported negative subjective effects of cannabis on cognition, memory, career, social life, physical health, and mental health.
