Early prediction of outcome from coma
1Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery/Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit, Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis, Missouri.
Abstract:
It is increasingly important to be able to predict early in the course of illness a patient's outcome from coma. Potential indicators include clinical scales, electrophysiologic responses, and cerebral blood flow and metabolism. Our current knowledge provides some understanding of the ultimate impact of the illness, but is of limited assistance in decisions regarding initiation or withdrawal of therapy.
